Nothing makes you wanna go out and grab the latest portable cassette tape recorder like a celebrity in a Sombrero and a holster. I'm guessing this print ad is from the 1970s.

A sculpture to remind people to take the airport bus and save the emissions of 50 cars. Great idea and apparently it's created quite a buzz.

[from creativity-online] Acne Advertising created a sculpture from of 50 scrap cars to look like the airport shuttle service's coaches alongside the highway to a Swedish airport. Fifty cars represents how many fewer cars are on the road when one airport shuttle bus is full of passengers. The campaign website hosts a live feed from the installation and counts all the cars en route to the airport in the video. Counters exhibit the number of cars next to the equivalent number of buses that would be on the road if those car passengers had taken the shuttle service. via creativity-online

I've noticed a lot of these ornamental retail structures in Japan. Has it caught on anywhere else?

We shot this commercial in June but finally, it's on air. The gorgeous winter wonderland of New Zealand, standing in for America was beautifully shot by Phil Brown. Also kudos for Fred Raimondi and Ron Herbst for their visual magic. Click on the movie after the still below.

Interesting article from New York Times.

“Prada Marfa” (2005), by Elmgreen & Dragset, at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

Excerpt from article: "The team known as Elmgreen & Dragset approach the question of art value differently. They made a sculpture in the form of a fake and empty Prada outlet and installed it in the middle of a Texas desert. Looking spiffy but forlorn in photographs in the show, the piece prompts Zen-like queries: What’s a brand name’s worth if there are no shoppers? What’s art worth in the middle of nowhere, without an audience?

Actually, the Prada store wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, and it did have an audience. It was installed near Marfa, Tex., home of the Donald Judd Foundation, and a much-favored art-world mecca. Even so, it makes a shrewd point about the arbitrariness of value, which is one of the points of the Graduate Center show."

A really fun short film using real life objects to pay tribute to video games of our youth. Check out their site for more cool stop motion films and spots. They seem to have a ton of fun making these.

Interesting observation by David Byrne (link). Being an advertising Art Director myself, I've noticed that the best photography direction comes from those agency creatives with the best references from the fine arts field. Inspiration or recreation? Sometimes, it's a fine line. BTW, Robert Longo's drawings are quite striking. Check them out (link).

Genius idea for Mini outdoor boards. Assuming it's from the always smart guys at Butler Shine.

[from Engadget:] If there was ever a slick way to get folks to willingly carry around an RFID tag, MINI USA has it all wrapped up. Catering to every person's egotistical side, MINI has begun a pilot advertising campaign in Chicago, New York, Miami, and San Francisco, which gives select Cooper owners the chance to get an RFID keyfob in the mail, and moreover, a reason to consistently drive under MINI billboards. Users can select a custom message to be encoded on their RFID chip, and when they cruise near an overhanging MINI billboard, their particular message lights up for the world (or at least nearby motorists) to see. Of course, we're sure messages will be edited before delivery, and you still need to be down with toting a homing signal around with you each time you cruise, but let's face it, the mastermind behind this ad campaign probably got the raise we all wanted, but didn't come close to. So if you're a MINI owner in one of the four lucky cities, keep a keen eye on that inbox, and word on the street is that MINI USA is planning on hitting up more cities if (read: when) this proves to be a smash hit.

Well, it's that time of the year again. Time to gather around the family table by the tree and share a traditional... bucket of KFC. Yes, if you're in Japan, that's often the case. And if you actually want to make sure you come home with that Colonel Sanders bucket with a Santa hat, you better reserve it weeks in advance.

It's the one story about Christmas in Japan I tell my friends that seem to get the most looks of disbelief so I'll share it here. Apparently this seemingly odd (but perfectly accepted in Japan) phenomenon started in 1974 as KFC started its first Christmas marketing campaign. Back then, the Japanese didn't eat fried chicken the way Americans do nor did they celebrate Christmas as widely either. The newly introduced fast food chain saw an opportunity to create enthusiasm around both after a regional manager took a hint from a foreigner in Tokyo commenting "Since I can't get a turkey in Japan, I'll get some chicken at KFC for Christmas." Imagine a TV commercial of a "typical" American family gathered around a Norman Rockwell Christmas eve, complete with tree, fireplace, stockings, reindeer sweaters and of course, a bucket of KFC on the table. This image resonated on Japanese minds and soon the red and white bucket became a staple in Japanese homes.

Here's the link to the current commercial on air in Japan. (link)

Happy Holidays everyone. Hope you're enjoying your bucket of KFC, where ever you are.

Click on the link to see golf balls impacting everyday things like a birthday cake, jello and a cantaloupe. I'm not sure if it appeals to the average empty nesting golfer but perhaps they're aiming for a younger crowd. Either way, it's mesmerizing to watch.

Take a look at this thought provoking film about our perceptions of beauty. Being in the business of manipulating images myself, it's definitely a sobering reminder how much we influence people's self esteem. I think it's a smart effort and I hope it gets a lot of buzz. Check out Dove's site (link) with e-cards and mission statements.

Taking inspiration from the Million Dollar Homepage (link) where a 21 year old college student sold a pixel for $1 each and made a million dollars, here's someone else's attempt in real life. I'm not quite sure if I understand the people behind this project (Artvertising?) but it's interesting to see the internet inspiring real life for a change.
