I wonder magazine covers with Steve Jobs will look this quaint one day?

Host Ira Glass on This American Life talks about the infamous line in the band Van Halen’s contract insisting that the groups’ dressing room include a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown M&Ms removed. Ira used to think this request was just petulant rock-star behavior. Then he talked to John Flansburgh, from the band They Might Be Giants—who are beginning their 40-city tour this October—and he explained why the M&M clause was actually an ingenious business strategy.

A visually interesting info-graphic video with interesting nuggets here and there. Being Japanese, a lot of the stats were familiar and some seemed wrong but it's well put together non the less. Click on video below.

"A documentary featuring the townspeople of Sidney, Ohio. Directed by Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross."

Roger Ebert called this film "achingly beautiful." Would love to check it out.

Nothing makes you wanna go out and grab the latest portable cassette tape recorder like a celebrity in a Sombrero and a holster. I'm guessing this print ad is from the 1970s.

With the proposed alliance of Chrysler and Fiat, would there be melding of the car designs as well?

I respect David Rockwell tremendously. His architecture and interior designs have been fresh and inspiration for many years. But he seems to have created a dark chamber of sobriety that didn't really help the festive mood that the Oscars is supposed to evoke. I'm sure it looked beautiful in person as his restaurant spaces always does. But on TV, it looked dim and cold. And it's not really the fault of the Production designer. All sorts of forces must have clashed to create a more somber mood this year, especially the idea that this is a "throw back to the depression era."

Top half of the stage looked like some Fritz Lang vision of a future ballroom, the stage floor inspired by the movie Tron. And did they not have the budget to light everything? Every scene looked dim.

The show seemed to be filled with these well meaning tributes like this but the cold, impersonal stage made it look more like the high court of Romulus making a judgement via holographic projections.

The only non-drowsy moment of the show was A.R. Rahman perfoming songs from Slumdog Millionaire. You could feel the energy of the performers and unlike a lot of the other scenes where people were reminiscing, it felt very much in the moment.

Here are some beautiful shots by photographer Richard Nicholson - some of the remaining professional darkrooms in London. I love the way he exposes the chaotic tapestry of the users' personalities that comes from years (decades?) of use, usually hidden in the dim light of mystery. I can almost smell the chemicals baked into the rooms. via link (thanks Thy!)

[written by Shape + Color ] There’s something about the confessional nature of Tim Etchells‘ neon signs - usually the vehicle for ‘Open’ and ‘Beer’ and ‘Ladies Ladies Ladies’, statements as obvious and mono-layered as they are intended to be seen - that make me feel like a voyeur when the typically surface-meaning-only tubes of light present us with a feeling much more nuanced. A sad voyeur. Like all hope or possibility of retribution has been sucked out of what’s being said, as if it’s placement into neon has rendered them without any second chances or chance for defense.

Like stars, they shine as brightly as they are lonely.

Well, the election's finally over. Why not celebrate with an amazing mix by Z-Trip that features hip hop/soul/electronica classics with Barack Obama's speech excerpts. It has everything from Arrested Development's People Everyday, Kool Moe Dee's Yes We Can O'Jay's Give The People What they Want, Nu Schooz's I Can't Wait, to Chemical Brother's song that chants "Brother's Gonna Work it Out" (What's the name of that song?) Check it out on the link below or go to DJ Z-Trip's site for the full mix.
