Sketchbook Series: Karen Klassen: "

Looking through Karen Klassen’s very impressive and extensive portfolio, you might wonder the preparations she takes to make one of her gorgeous illustrations. Today, on a reader’s request, I am happy to share an inside peek at her many sketchbooks. In these pages, compositions are thought out, sketches for finals pieces are made, type treatments are tested, and then there are many explorations of mediums. She seems to be able to handle a variety of materials expertly from painting a realistic portrait, to collaging layers of textured papers. Thanks so much to Karen for sharing. See more of her work here.

This makes my mouth water. It's one of the things I miss the most about eating in Japan.

Japan Premium Beef, Inc.: "

by Laura Neilson

Wagyu.jpg

Just in time for grilling season, Japan Premium Beef recently opened its first retail shop in New York's Noho district to much acclaim. Now discerning carnivores can take meaty matters into their own hands by purchasing various cuts of the importer's Wagyu-style beef, formerly available to restaurants only.

The superlative-quality beef, best known for its vividly marbled appearance, high percentage of unsaturated fat and refined flavor, comes from Oregon-raised Wagyu (or Washugyu) cattle.

Originally, Japan Premium intended to export the beef to Japan, but recent international shipping restrictions foiled the plan, resulting in the upscale butcher shop.

While the beef is certainly the main attraction, the presentation and aesthetic of the storefront itself shouldn't go unnoticed—even vegetarians can appreciate its spare, minimalist decor, befitting a scene from sci-fi flick or contemporary art installation.

'We believe that Washugyu is art,' explains manager Taiki Otsuka, of the store's all-white setting which deliberately lets the product speak for itself. Given this conceit, it seems almost fitting that Japan Premium Beef's home is a storied building once owned by Andy Warhol.

With Boxed Water Is Better, the only thing you're really consuming is the water itself. A new brand—and concept—Boxed Water has successfully taken the bottled water phenomenon to eco-friendly heights.

A sculpture to remind people to take the airport bus and save the emissions of 50 cars. Great idea and apparently it's created quite a buzz.

[from creativity-online] Acne Advertising created a sculpture from of 50 scrap cars to look like the airport shuttle service's coaches alongside the highway to a Swedish airport. Fifty cars represents how many fewer cars are on the road when one airport shuttle bus is full of passengers. The campaign website hosts a live feed from the installation and counts all the cars en route to the airport in the video. Counters exhibit the number of cars next to the equivalent number of buses that would be on the road if those car passengers had taken the shuttle service. via creativity-online

An electric car that was just announced by Chrysler. The specs seem to be more like a suped up golf cart than a real car but you can't help but smile at it... as it smiles back at you.
